Welcome

Welcome to the next edition of “The Experience”. I pray that this finds you at a positive time of your day. My prayers are with all of the people oversees that are dealing with the attacks on the U.S. Embassies. Just as we bring four people home from the first attach, there are reports about another breach. Yes this is hard, but we cannot blame governments or whole countries for the acts of a few. Even more we cannot openly blame and react against people who live in the US for the actions of those overseas. With us just having the anniversary of 9/11 I ask each and every one of you to pray for safety, peace and awareness of everyone around the world.

At this point in time we are in a fight against obesity (especially childhood obesity). Over the last 10 – 20 years this country has become more and more unhealthy. Now this is not to say that we do not or did not have healthy people out there. It is just that the percentage of unhealthy greatly outnumbered the healthy. But now health and fitness is in the forefront of this battle with the White House leading the charge. So let’s stand together and raise the awareness of a healthy lifestyle. We have to be at the front expressing everything that is good about exercise. Find non-evasive ways to approach your family and friends about their health. This is not giving anyone the right to bash or chastise people, but you do have every right to try to encourage and lead.

So what can you do to encourage a healthy lifestyle?

  •       Invite them to the physical activities that you usually do
  •       Find out what activity they like and make an effort to participate with them
  •       Create a support/accountability group
  •       Talk about healthy (good tasting) recipes
  •       Pass along informative information, like this newsletter (shameless plug)
  •       Always complement the work that they are doing. Encouragement goes a long way

I hope that these ideas help. If you have more tips please feel free to share them with us on our FaceBook Page

As always thank you for taking the time to read my message and I hope that you found at least a bit of inspiration in what I had to say. Please take the time to look at the great information on the rest of this newsletter and remember to leave your comments on the Face Book page (The newsletter will be posted there as well). Also please go to the web site for more fitness tips, like us on Face Book, follow us on Twitter and You Tube with the buttons on the side and check-in / leave a review on Yelp. You will get some great training videos and information while seeing the workings of the SFX staff and clients. Thank you and have a blessed day.

Hello SFX community. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to the exceptional group of trainers and instructors at SFX. I know that you do not have the time to meet each one personally. Actually with everyone coming in at different times there are members of the staff that you have never met. So over the next few newsletters I will be giving you some insight into the minds and make up of each of our trainers and instructors. I hope you take the time to read all of their answers and maybe find out something that you didn’t know. Thank you

Name: Shelley Petree

How many years have you been a trainer/instructor?  17

Where was your first fitness job?

Sports Life/Roswell 1995

How did you get started in the fitness industry?

In 1994 I joined Bally’s to lift weights at the age of 32. Three months later I joined SportsLife where I hired a Personal Trainer. He encouraged me to pursue a PT certification and 6 months later I became ACE certified.

What do you like most about the fitness industry?

I never envisioned myself in the corporate world, so the flexible schedule allows me the freedom to be my own boss.

What do you like least about the fitness industry?

I think there are too many myths that are “taught” to fitness enthusiasts by uneducated or misinformed sources. I would like to see the industry have more regulations.

What is your training philosophy?

I believe health is not just physical exercise in the gym. I tell all my clients that I can put them through a great workout in the gym…but it’s just a small part of their total program. It’s more what they do outside the gym that completes their health, physically and mentally.

How have you changed from when you first started to now?

I have a more balanced approach. It’s not just about how you look from working out but the effects on your total health.

Who is / was the biggest influence in you fitness career? Why?

My personal trainer taught me with a “hands on” approach by allowing me to learn by training his clients as he educated and critiqued me during those sessions.

What makes you unique (you) concerning fitness?

I think my age and experience allow me to empathize with my also aging clients. I understand how we are changing as we age and can relate to the client by example.

What are your hobbies outside of fitness?

I read constantly and love being outside “digging in the dirt” or mowing my beautiful lawn.

If you were not working in fitness what would you want to do?

I would rescue dogs and cats or maybe sell Frisbees on the beach or own a bakery.

Please share your family information (ie spouse, children, parents etc).

Name: Mark Pozin

How many years have you been a trainer/instructor?

10 years

Where was your first fitness job?

Kaz Fitness Center, Auburn, AL

How did you get started in the fitness industry?

I disliked schoolteaching and wanted a more flexible schedule. Personal training gave me the chance to work with a wide variety of people in an environment that I enjoy.

What do you like most about the fitness industry?

Seeing people transform their physiques and lifestyles through a healthy approach to nutrition and working out.

What do you like least about the fitness industry?

CrossFit-type training programs- too random and lacking in internal logic.  It's a shame that some people will throw out decades of training knowledge for the fad of the movement.

What is your training philosophy?

Whatever you do, STAY ACTIVE.  Consistency and perseverance in training (and diet) are key factors for looking and feeling fit.

How have you changed from when you first started to now?

I emphasize core work a lot more these days.  A strong core is crucial for posture, trunk stability, and injury prevention.

Who is your biggest influence in your fitness career?

Marius Vorster- a trainer who consistently produces amazing results.

What are your hobbies outside of fitness?

Spending time with my fiancee, opera (I'm a classically-trained singer), classical music and literature, art, movies, working out, hiking

If you were not working in fitness what would you do?

I have my hands full with my nutritional supplement business, including my Nutrition Source store in Marietta.  If it were possible to build a substantial career, I'd sing full time.

Please share your family information.

Fiancee: Amanda Carter

Parents: Mikhail and Alla Pozin

What Americans Eat

How does your nutrition score card look - healthy, need improvements or off the charts?  This weeks column will give you some in site as to what Americans are eating, what the food trends have been over the past 20 years are as well as some healthy guidelines for you to eat by.

You maybe surprised to hear that Americans are eating less red meat, more poultry and slightly more fish and shellfish.  Unlike red meat and poultry, seafood does not yet require federal inspection so proceed cautiously when selecting fish.

There has been a 300% increase in the drinking of low fat and not fat milk compared to a 54% decline in the consumption of whole milk.

Americans are consuming fewer eggs due to the media attention concerning cholesterol and its links to coronary heart disease.

Since 1968 fat and oil consumption has increased almost 20% due to a greater intake of fried foods particularly from fast-food restaurants and increased consumption of salad oils.  Decreases are shown for the use of butter, shortening and margarine.

The consumption of sweetners especially high-fructose corn sweeteners has increased along with a dramatic rise in low-caloire sweeteners including aspartame.  Some healthful low glycemic food choices include navy beans, kidney beans, lentils and peanuts.

More than 40% of Americans take supplements  spending about 6 billion yearly.  When vitamin intake achieves recommended levels, supplements neither improve exercise performance nor necessarily increase the blood levels of these micronutrients in healthy individuals.
