Welcome

Welcome to the next edition of “The Experience”. I pray that this finds you at a positive time of your day. This will be a quick welcome from me this time. I am just getting back in from a great vacation to Panama and getting settled back into the everyday routine. My family and I had a wonderful time and got to experience some great attractions. What made the trip exceptional for me was that I was completely out of contact with anything that wasn’t right there with me. I finally got the chance to get away and relax. Now it is time to get back to work and build this facility up to the level that I know it can be. Please enjoy the next phase of trainer question and answer and get to know more about the staff at SFX. I hope that you are enjoying these features and starting to learn more about what makes SFX what it is.

As always thank you for taking the time to read my message and I hope that you found at least a bit of inspiration in what I had to say. Please take the time to look at the great information on the rest of this newsletter and remember to leave your comments on the Face Book page (The newsletter will be posted there as well). Also please go to the web site for more fitness tips, like us on Face Book, follow us on Twitter and You Tube with the buttons on the side and check-in / leave a review on Yelp. You will get some great training videos and information while seeing the workings of the SFX staff and clients. Thank you and have a blessed day.

Getting to Know...  The Trainers of SFX

Hello SFX community. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to the exceptional group of trainers and instructors at SFX. I know that you do not have the time to meet each one personally. Actually with everyone coming in at different times there are members of the staff that you have never met. So over the next few newsletters I will be giving you some insight into the minds and make up of each of our trainers and instructors. I hope you take the time to read all of their answers and maybe find out something that you didn’t know. Thank you

Julian

Name:  Anthony Gugliotta

How many years have you been a trainer / instructor?

15

Where was your first fitness job?

In Cleveland Ohio at a wellness center right after college

How did you get started in the fitness industry?

I received a degree in Exercise Physiology at Kent State University with intentions of working in a clinical setting, but when I moved to Atlanta 6 months after graduating, there weren't any jobs available.  I had to start making money because I moved here with no money, no job, and a new car that I had just purchased as a graduation gift to myself. (real smart college graduate)  I went to World Gym in Marietta to see what their membership rates were and I saw a sign for hiring personal trainers.  The rest is history.

What do you like most about the fitness industry?

I love helping people find their path in fitness.  Everybody is different and It is my job to help them realize their own strengths that will lead them to reaching their goals.

What do you like least about the fitness industry?

The fact that anyone can get a certification online for 49 bucks.  It's not really regulated, so it's up to the consumer to weed out who's actually qualified, and who's a poser.

What is your training philosophy?

1) Consistency - Do the right things 80% of the time and you're golden

2) Intensity - Bring it or go home.  Going through the motions ain't gonna cut it!

3) Muscle and Dietary Confusion - Keep your body guessing

How have you changed from when you first started to now?

I think that I have changed a lot.  When I was just starting out 15 years ago I was stuck on the "do a set, rest, do another set, rest, do a 3rd set rest,  traditional weight training protocol and then had my clients do 45 minutes of cardio on their own.  The problem with that was most of my clients wouldn't do their cardio on their own, and the workouts weren't as fun as they could have been.  Also, I only did one on one training.  Now I only train group format sessions with metabolic training methods that incorporate weights with a cardio element that gets great results and is a lot more fun.

Who is / was the biggest influence in you fitness career? Why?

Probably Arnold.  I believe that he actually took fitness and bodybuilding to another level in this country and made it more mainstream.  If you never saw "Pumping Iron" you need to go see it.  It's a documentary of him training for the Olympia in the 1970's.  Lou Ferrigno is his main competition and he plays mind games with him throughout.  It's very interesting to see them both in their prime.

What makes you unique (you) concerning fitness?

I have clients that have been with me for years say that I never given them the same workout twice.  I love changing it up.

What are your hobbies outside of fitness?

I do love golfing, but I haven't been in a couple of years.  I need to find the time for that.  Anyone want to go?

If you were not working in fitness what would you want to do?

Underwear model ;)

Please share your family information  (ie spouse, children, parents etc)

I have 4 older sisters.  2 live in Cleveland, Oh, 1 in Austin, Tx, and 1 in Dallas, Tx.  My Mom is also in Cleveland.  I have 11 nieces and nephews with the oldest niece only 8 years younger than me.

Name: Monique (Moe) Adams

How many years have you been a trainer / instructor?

16 Years

Where was your first fitness job?

At a gym in Alma, Michigan

How did you get started in the fitness industry?

I joined the East Cobb YMCA after having my first baby, started taking group classes and fell in love! I was approached by one of the instructors who suggested that I should think about becoming a fitness instructor myself! The rest is history, ha!

What do you like most about the fitness industry?

Being able to motivate every person who steps through the door…..hands down!

What do you like least about the fitness industry?

People who try to make a quick buck promising an easy fix and cure all for your personal fitness goals….”Get Ripped in 10 Minutes”….”lose those unwanted love handles in just 3 minutes per day”….”Watch the pounds melt away when you take this pill”…ARGH!! It takes dedicated hard work, clean eating and that is the bottom line folks!

What is your training philosophy?

Making exercise as fun and mind blowing as possible so that you don’t realize you are working out!

How have you changed from when you first started to now?

I have learned so many things over the years! From fitness friends, workshops, nooks, videos, etc… Of course everyone starts off very “green” and you have to get experience under your belt. I guess how I have changed is I now realize the impact a fitness professional can have on a client or student! It’s very valuable and powerful in a good way! We can actually change lives out there for the better and I think that is so cool! Never stop learning!

Who is / was the biggest influence in you fitness career?  Why?

My mentor, Alison Kelly! She was my very first kickboxing instructor at the YMCA! She taught me tons, helped me get started and is still a dear friend to this day! She is an inspiration!

What makes you unique (you) concerning fitness?

I don’t know if this is unique but I really feel the energy that exudes from my students to me and me back to them is like a magical energy ball element! It is NOT my job to just show up, teach and leave….it is my DUTY to show up, plug in to you and give you the best experience I can!

What are your hobbies outside of fitness?

Being a mom to 2 wonderful boys, spending time with people I love, mixing music, cooking and I love to clean toilets, ha! That last one is not true ;)

If you were not working in fitness what would you want to do?

Music is my passion and outlet, so working in the music industry.

Please share your family information (ie spouse, children, parents etc)

I am a single mom of my two favorite people in the world, Dillon 20 and Logan 16! They are the joys of my life!

Dieting and Diabetes

Very few people realize the profound effect that weight has on diabetes. Even instances of gestational diabetes are much greater in patients that are overweight than in those that are not. Type 2, or adult onset diabetes is more commonly found in overweight people than those that are within their ideal' weight ranges.

In fact, almost 90% of those with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. If you are suffering from Type 2 diabetes, the best gift you could possibly give yourself just might be the gift of getting your weight under control.

Among those that suffer from Type 2 diabetes almost 40% have high blood pressure, which is another condition that is believed to be exacerbated by excess weight. Being overweight might also lead to a condition known as insulin resistance in which the body no longer responds to the insulin that is needed to assist the body in using sugar and glucose as fuel on a cellular level.

There are some things you can do to help yourself out if you have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or labeled at risk for this devastating condition. First of all, take off the pounds. I know this is much easier said than done.

Dieting is never easy and rarely fun for the average person. However, if you do not begin to take drastic steps toward procuring the best possible health for yourself you may not be able to enjoy the quality of life you had planned for your golden years. Let your condition be your motivation and make plans to enjoy watching your grandchildren and great grandchildren graduate college.

Fight it standing up. Don't sit down and let Diabetes control you. Stand up and take control of your body back. This is a fight to the finish and if you let it, diabetes will be your end. If you fight it standing up, lose the weight, get out there and exercise, listen to the doctor's orders and follow them. Find the strength within you to battle this disease head on. You'll be amazed at what happens when you decide to stand up and fight for your health. Get active.

Find activities that you enjoy and get out there and do them. Don't make those activities passive activities either. Even if it's just going out to play shuffleboard everyday get out there and play. Enjoy your time in the sun. Pick flowers with the little ones. Take up golf. Do whatever it takes to get up and moving each and every day in order to remember why you want to live forever in the first place. Watch what you eat. Garbage in, garbage out, right? You have strict dietary requirements once you've been diagnosed with diabetes. This means that you absolutely must follow your dietary restrictions.

Learn to live within those limits in order to live and enjoy life to the fullest you can. The amazing thing is that there are all kinds of foods available that are friendly to those with diabetes that weren't around just a few short years ago. It is quite possible to live and eat quite nicely with diabetes if you stick to your plan. The most important thing about dieting with diabetes is that you never lose sight of how crucial it is to do so.

Recipe:

Quinoa with Roasted Vegetables and Herbs

(6 to 8 servings)

1 large eggplant, diced
1 large zucchini, diced
1 yellow bell pepper, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 large red onion, diced
16 cherry tomatoes
8 cloves garlic, halved
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
2 bunches freshly minced basil
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 cups warm cooked quinoa

1 lemon
Salt and pepper

Place the eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, onion, and garlic in a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil, rosemary, 3/4 of the minced basil and season to taste. Mix well and refrigerate for an hour. Preheat the barbecue on medium high. Transfer the vegetables to a barbecue vegetable pan. Roast over the fire until the vegetables are crunchy and slightly browned, mixing on occasion.

Add the tomatoes and cook for another 2 minutes. Spread the warm quinoa in the bottom of a serving platter and top with the grilled vegetables. Sprinkle lemon juice, remaining basil and serve immediately.

Option: Before cooking your quinoa, according to basic package directions, you can add freshly minced herbs. Or, if you prefer, when it is still hot, and you have simply followed the basic cooking directions without adding anything, you can then add some freshly minced salad herbs and a little bit of olive oil to it. Either way, will emphasize the flavors. I personally like doing so, after it is cooked, as I feel the quinoa has a more refreshing taste at the end.
