The Many Faces of Training

I was with a client today and she mentioned talking to someone about "running away" from her trainer.  It made me think about the roles that a good trainer may have when working with various clients.

A good trainer must be a:

  • Motivator - for the client that needs to be pushed to reach their goals.
  • Teacher - for the client that knows little to nothing about fitness.
  • Programmer - for the motivated client that just doesn't know what to do.
  • Coach - for the client that needs guidance to break their barriers
  • Support Staff - for the client that needs to vent about their fitness frustrations
  • Psychologist - for the client that needs a boost to their self confidence
  • Tyrant - for the client that wants to workout, needs to workout, and will do everything in their power not to workout
  • Conscience - for the client that needs to be reminded what to do when they are not in the gym

If you are a client, which type of trainer do you need?

If you are a trainer, which type best describes you?  Also, are you only one type or can you change for each client?
